California State Assembly Honors Physician Anesthesiologist Week
ACR 3 Recognizes the 75th Anniversary of the California Society of Anesthesiologists, Highlights Their Important Role in Patient Safety
Sacramento, CA (February 1, 2023) – In honor of the critical role physician anesthesiologists play in patient care, the California State Assembly on Monday passed Assembly Concurrent Resolution 3, which officially marks the week of January 29 – February 4, 2023 as “Physician Anesthesiologist Week.”
The resolution passed the Assembly Floor by unanimous vote, with 71 members officially signing on to be coauthors.
ACR 3 noted that physician anesthesiologists have the highest levels of training and complete between 12,000 and 16,000 hours of training before practicing independently. This training helps to prepare them for the more than 100 million operations and procedures performed with anesthesia on an annual basis in the United States.
Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), introduced ACR 3 and stated, “Physician anesthesiologists are guardians of patient safety in the operating room, in the delivery room, in the intensive care unit, in pain management clinics, and on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are an essential profession in the healthcare industry. For their dedication to their patients, it is our honor to recognize them for the work they do to care for us.”
Haney also highlighted the role of the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) in navigating critical moments in the operating room and multiple procedural areas. He also noted the exceptional effort and dedication of physician anesthesiologists in serving “the sickest of patients diagnosed with and suffering from COVID-19.”
Assemblymember Haney closed the presentation by noting that “the California Society of Anesthesiologists, which represent more than 3,000 physicians who specialize in anesthesiology and pain medicine, is celebrating their 75th anniversary and has taken proactive steps to promote patient safety, and increase education about pain management, safe opioid use, and non-opioid alternatives to pain management.”
After the unanimous vote in support of ACR 3, the legislators recognized and welcomed a congregation of special guests from CSA to the Assembly Chamber including CSA President Ed Mariano and CSA Legislative & Practice Affairs Division Chair Todd Primack.
