UC San Diego Department of Anesthesia Extends a Lifeline to El Centro Hospital

By Alvaro Andrés Macias, MD, FASA, MHA

In a remarkable display of collaboration and commitment to addressing healthcare inequities, the Department of Anesthesia at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has stepped up to support El Centro Regional Medical Center in a time of dire need. Located in the Imperial Valley, El Centro is a small and isolated town in California facing significant challenges in healthcare delivery due to chronic understaffing, particularly in its operating rooms. The town’s geographic isolation further exacerbates its access to specialized medical care, leaving many patients in critical surgical services underserved.

Recognizing this urgent need, Dr. Anush Minokadeh and UCSD’s Department of Anesthesia launched an initiative allowing faculty to voluntarily contribute their expertise at El Centro as part of their clinical commitment. This innovative program has provided a crucial boost to El Centro Hospital, ensuring that surgeries requiring anesthesia services can be performed safely and effectively. By leveraging the skills and dedication of UCSD anesthesiologists, the initiative helps bridge the gap between urban academic medicine and rural healthcare shortages. Staff anesthesiologists’ days at El Centro are part of their work commitment to the department. El Centro Hospital supports the initiative by providing financial assistance in partnership with UCSD.

“This is more than just a professional obligation; it’s a mission to provide care where it is needed most,” said a UCSD faculty member participating in the program. “Our goal is to ensure that patients in El Centro have access to the same high-quality anesthesia care as those in larger urban centers.”

The partnership, which started during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been transformative for both institutions. For UCSD anesthesiologists, it offers a unique opportunity to engage in community-based care, expanding their understanding of rural health challenges while making a tangible difference in patients’ lives. For El Centro Hospital, the support has been life-saving, allowing the hospital to sustain its surgical services and deliver critical care to its community.

This collaborative effort showcases how academic institutions can partner with underserved communities to address healthcare disparities. It is a model for how strategic initiatives can provide sustainable solutions to staffing shortages in rural and underserved areas.

As healthcare systems nationwide grapple with resource disparities, UCSD’s partnership with El Centro Hospital stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in improving access to care. This initiative enhances the health and well-being of El Centro’s residents and underscores the role of academic medicine in advancing global health equity.
