Students Gain Real-Life Experiences from Medical Professionals

Project Lead the Way

This fall, anesthesiology residents from UCLA Medical Center led a series of engaging, hands-on workshops for nearly 100 high school students in the Los Angeles area who are currently taking PLTW Biomedical Science courses, providing an exciting glimpse into the world of medicine. The workshops focused on life-saving techniques, such as maneuvers to maintain circulation and breathing, which anesthesiology professionals practice daily in their work. Under the leadership of Dr. Sophia Poorsattar, these residents connected with students in a meaningful way, making complex concepts accessible and inspiring a new generation of aspiring medical professionals.

This initiative is part of our partnership with the California Society of Anesthesiologists that allows students to gain practical experience and learn about critical careers in the healthcare field. Feedback from students highlighted the impact of the experience.

“It’s incredible that as a ninth-grade student, I am able to be talking to actual UCLA doctors; you guys are so inspiring,” one student said.

“They not only enhanced our understanding but also allowed us to gain practical experience, which is crucial for our learning and development,” another student remarked.

These workshops have proven to be a powerful way to engage and inspire students, showing them that careers in medicine are within reach and worth pursuing.
