Ongoing Maui Wildfire Information

Update as of 9/27/2023: Mayor Richard Bissen announces a phased approach to re-opening West Maui to visitors – News Flash • Maui County • CivicEngage

The California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) has been closely monitoring the situation in Maui since the profound wildfire that sadly has greatly impacted West Maui, with Lahaina bearing the brunt of its devastation.  Our hearts, thoughts and sincerest wishes remain with those experiencing the utmost loss in this time.

Since the fire, CSA has been working directly with our partners on the islands to assess progress and determine the appropriate course of action for upcoming events such as ours. Per the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau, while vacation travel to West Maui (including Lahaina, Nāpili, Kāʻanapali, and Kapalua) is strongly discouraged until further notice, travel to all other parts of Maui (including Kahului, Wailuku, Kīhei, Wailea, Mākena, Pāʻia and Hāna) and the other Hawaiian Islands are encouraged to keep residents employed and their economy alive. These areas are lush with activities, with plenty for the entire family to enjoy.

The CSA’s 2024 Winter Conference is currently scheduled at the Grand Wailea, located in South Maui January 29 – February 2, 2024.  We are committed to holding this meeting and doing so in the spirit of Hoʻihoʻi (Giving back). We ask that you consider still attending this meeting. We believe we can hold a meeting while being respectful of the Island and the West Maui residents.

As part of the spirit of Hoʻihoʻi we are actively exploring community service opportunities on the afternoons of our meeting (which is after the events conclude).  If you have any ideas or areas that you are following that you’d like considered, do let us know. We also highly encourage you to find your own opportunities that you are passionate about that you can give back to currently, or while on the Island.

Below are links to help keep you informed of the efforts on Maui, along with resources where you can donate or send items.  We will continue to monitor these items and update our attendees as much as we can.
