Family update: My mom completed radiation therapy for a presumed lung malignancy. She’s tolerated treatment well, and we’re watching closely for side effects in the coming weeks and months — though those who know her know she’s not taking this lying down. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with support. I send out my best to other CSA members who have or are actively going through this journey as well. Remember to take care of yourself and your family and know your second family, CSA, is here for you.
Why it matters: CSA leadership shows up for each other–for members and patients.
ASA Board of Directors’ Meeting (Rosemont, IL, Aug 14–16): Two of our own CSA past presidents gave candidate speeches to the board ahead of their bids in the October ASA House of Delegates elections — Dr. Christine Doyle for ASA Vice Speaker, and Dr. Ed Mariano for ASA Assistant Treasurer. See the ASA MMO by Dr. Patrick Giam for more information.
Legislative & advocacy:
- The CSAPAC attended a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra in Sacramento on August 17th, where we connected directly with the candidate and advocated for our members’ and patients’ concerns.

- I attended Congressmember Jared Huffman‘s book talk and signing at the Ebell in Los Angeles and thanked him for his ongoing support — including the ASA’s backing of a letter from Congressmembers Brownley and Onder to preserve current levels of anesthesia care in the VA system. The evening included an interview with Bill Nye — a great night of learning and advocacy.

- The California Legislature is just about ready to complete the second year of the session with just floor sessions in both houses to be concluded and adjourned on August 31–be on lookout for updates after close of session in the next newsletter.
What’s next:
- 2027 CSA Budget: Treasurer Dr. John Hsieh and Assistant Treasurer Dr. Jeff Kwok are hard at work ensuring sound financial stewardship for our members.
- EPD Strategic Planning Meeting kicks off in September, shaping recommendations for the upcoming HOD and BOD meetings.
- HOD prep is underway — packet compilation, plus education and orientation for current and incoming BOD members.
- I’ll join a panel at the California Ambulatory Surgery Association (CASA) meeting on September 3rd in Monterey.
- APSF Stoelting Conference September 9-10 livestream registration for SOS! Signals of Safety … Safely Across the Patient’s Perioperative Journey
- SAVE the DATE for CSA all member Reception at ASA in San Diego on October 17, 7pm-10pm
Be well, Be kind and Stay Vigilant.
