June is a season of transition in medicine, and I want to take a moment to mark it.
To our graduating residents and fellows — congratulations. You have completed one of the most rigorous training paths in all of medicine. I remember what it felt like to cross that finish line — the exhaustion, the pride, and the quiet sense that everything was about to change. The specialty you are entering is better because you chose it. We are proud of you and excited to have you as colleagues.
To our incoming interns, residents, and fellows beginning this summer — welcome. You are joining a community that is deeply committed to your growth, your well-being, and your success. The road ahead is demanding, but you will not walk it alone. Last week, eleven of your peers walked the halls of the State Capitol, met with legislators, and made their voices heard. That door is open to you too.

One piece of advice I wish someone had given me earlier: secure your specialty-specific disability insurance before you leave your training program. As a resident or fellow, you have a unique window to obtain guaranteed issue coverage — meaning you can lock in protection without medical underwriting. That window closes when training ends.
